LONGLEGS REVIEW

LONGLEGS REVIEW

So I’m a year late seeing this movie but I finally gave it a watch and I must say it was pretty fucking good.

I’m a sucker for a good serial killer movie. 10 families murdered and they can’t figure it out? Oh I’m SAT.

The opening sequence was very fucking unsettling. This longlegs nigga is generational ugly. The type of ugly that’s passed down from generation to generation like a sweet potato pie recipe. Nigga look like Wile E Coyote after he got caught in his own traps chasing the road runner.

Maika Monroe as Detective Lee Harker was one of the most anxious character portrayals I ever seen. Everything about her character was awkward and always on pins and needles. Every time she spoke to anyone it always felt as if she was uncomfortable. Which hinted at her having some type of psychic ability.

When she has visions she always looks over her left shoulder  and its interesting because the left shoulder is where the devil sits.

I love movies with codes that have to be cracked and in Longlegs letters are written with special characters and have to be decoded at every murder scene or potential murder scene. Lee has to figure out the algorithm and how the crimes are connected.

Just when you think the film would be a typical serial killer hunting movie the film takes a hard left turn that in my opinion was a big risk because it could really make people say “this is some bullshit”. I think that’s where people would be split on. Some may think that the plot got even more interesting and some may think this is where the plot fell apart.

I thought the risk for the end was good because it blends two types of genres within horror and I think we need more of that especially within an original movie.

The way this film is shot with the colors and lighting was perfect. The scenes shot in Lee’s mother house made the house feel like there was no air to breathe in there which helped with the fact that Lee’s mother was a hoarder and does not throw anything away. It just does a great job with the atmosphere. It feels like you’re watching the movie while holding your breath the entire time. The camera work was immaculate and it made the entire movie uncomfortable.

Nic Cage performance as Longlegs was bizarre, funny, creepy, and disturbing. There’s this part where he just starts randomly singing and the shit is funny but at the same time so fucking unhinged. He’s not in this movie much but every time he’s in a scene it’s always so uneasy and unpredictable.

Alicia Witt as Ruth Harker was so toxic and religious and it was a miracle that Lee survived being raised by her. If you ever seen the movie “Carrie” she reminds me of Carrie’s mother. You can make the argument that Ruth Harker was the most terrifying person in this movie. She was the spokesperson of tragedy.

This movie goes into devil worship really heavy and there’s a quote in this movie from Lee where she says she never said her prayers because prayers scared her. I think that she was scared to pray because she felt like she was praying to the devil given the circumstances of the movie.

This is a film that I’m going to watch again tomorrow night so I can not have any expectations and really look close for anything I might’ve missed but this is one of the best horror films for me in years. I’m mad I didn’t see this in theaters.

Love, Benny
